Taylor Russell McKenzie, who was born in Vancouver on the 18th of July 1994, was raised in Toronto and Vancouver. Russell was the daughter of a black man and a white mom. She was raised primarily with her mom's family. Her skin color made her feel unaccepted during her teenage years. Their parents were struggling financially and had to relocate sixteen times in order to take on her father's work. In spite of this, Russell mentioned how in her early years "there always was a chance for innovation, to design something new."As an infant, Russell was already artistically inclined. At first, she was interested in pursuing a career in ballet and later to be an artist. She was 18 when she started her first class in acting. She saved the money from work to purchase an automobile and drove to Los Angeles to audition. When the money ran out she would go back to work until she earned enough money to be able to go back for another audition. This went on for four consecutive years, until she was finally offered her first major television role.
